Brian Cox as Hannibal Lecter in Manhunter

Filmed in Georgia and is a weekly column by Frank Hotchkiss. Contact Frank for recommendations at online@savannahnow.com.

Manhunter Thomas Harris’ book is this brilliant writer’s first terrifying presentation depicting a deranged Hannibal Lecter, and arguably the most terrifying.

When it was first released in 1986, it fell flat on its face, but slowly gained a cult following which led to huge popularity, “The Silence of the Lambs”, “Hannibal” and “Red Dragon”.

And yes, it was partly filmed in Georgia — namely at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, with a room made up to be a Lecter cell. In addition, Detective Will Graham resides at the 50-story Marriott Marquis Hotel on Peachtree Center Street in Atlanta. Other locations include Washington, D.C. for FBI filming, St. Louis, Missouri for airport shots, and North Carolina for beach scenes.

First, the plot: a retired FBI agent named Will Graham specializes in understanding the minds of those who commit horrific serial murders in order to catch future perpetrators.

Graham reluctantly returns to active duty to track down a madman who has randomly and ruthlessly begun to slaughter wonderful families, young children, and all. Graham has less than a month before the killer strikes again, because his attacks are timed to a full moon and are a bloody mess including placing shards of postmortem mirrors in the eyes of the dead.

Who isn’t crazy can understand this?
